This seminar will focus on the recent radical changes to the way in which claims for competition law breach can be brought in the UK. On 1 October, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 came into force. The Act is intended to encourage and facilitate private enforcement of competition law, in particular by:

• enabling claimants (particularly consumers and small businesses) to bring "collective proceedings" (class actions) for competition law claims; and
• widening the jurisdiction of the Competition Appeal Tribunal, so it can hear stand-alone claims and grant injunctions in competition law cases.

These changes are expected to lead to an increase in competition law claims in the UK.This, together with the widening of the jurisdiction of the specialist Competition Appeal Tribunal to enable it to hear stand-alone claims and grant injunctions in competition law cases, is expected to increase further the growth in competition law based claims in the UK.
