The Dentons Canada pro bono program has demonstrated a commitment to the rights of grandparents who are raising their grandchildren through its partnership with Pro Bono Ontario and its work for CANGRANDS, a national non-profit grass roots organization supporting grandparents caring for grandchildren in “kinship families.”
On National Grandparents Day (celebrated in the US and Canada on September 8) our Toronto office hosted a pre-screening of GrandParenting. This documentary examines the lives of seniors who experience an unexpected return to parenting, when their grown children turn to them for help raising their own children. Across Ontario and throughout Canada, thousands of children are being raised full-time by their grandparents. The documentary sheds light on a family dynamic that has opened new worlds for both the grandparents and grandchildren.
Produced by award-winning filmmaker Karen Shopsowitz, the documentary explores the challenges, joys and issues grandparents face when stepping into the role of parent to their grandchildren.
The documentary is scheduled to air on TVO. You can view the trailer here.
