With more than 30 distinguished years of experience as an energy lawyer, Mike has advised clients on a number of areas such as regulatory applications and approvals, litigation, arbitration, mergers and acquisitions, corporate guidance and navigation, and government relations and public policy. Mike has also been qualified as an energy professional before the courts in both Canada and the United States.

Mike has authored three editions of the leading Canadian oil and gas text, Halsbury’s Laws of Canada - Oil and Gas, and recently rewritten Canadian Oil and Gas (LexisNexis) as the third edition (first published in 1955). Mike also acts as a trusted advisor to private and public companies across Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. His clients have included large and small exploration and production companies, governments and multi-national infrastructure firms.

He has continually been acknowledged for his legal energy experience. Mike’s accolades include being named by Best Lawyers in Canada in the area of natural resource law in 2018, recognized by Lexpert’s Special Edition Report on Canada’s Leading Energy Lawyers in 2016, and he was named one of Alberta’s 50 most influential people in 2015 by Alberta Venture. His involvement with media includes contributing industry-related articles and commentary for LexisNexis, Lexpert Magazine, Law360, CAPL Magazine “The Negotiator” and Oil and Gas Bulletin.

Mike earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Victoria in 1982 and later earned his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Saskatchewan in 1986. He was called to the bar in Alberta (1987), British Columbia (2015) and was appointed Queen’s Counsel (2007).
