We continue our series of Net Zero Energy events with a session focusing on the oil and gas industry, as it grapples with unprecedented economic turbulence.

Estimates vary as to how much fossil fuel we can still be extracting and using in 2050 if we are to achieve net zero carbon emissions, and much depends on assumptions about the development of other forms of energy and potential substitutes for the non-energy uses of oil and gas. Against this background, what does it mean when an oil and gas producer commits to a net zero target by mid-century, as BP and Repsol, for example, have now done?

In which new technologies will the industry have to invest? What kind of regulatory and pricing signals are needed to encourage them to take the right kinds of action at the right time? How can action taken at a national level make a difference to such a global industry? And how do the recent shocks to global oil markets play into all this?
