Washington, DC—Jeffrey R. Krilla, co-chair of Dentons' Africa Committee and principal in the firm's Public Policy and Regulatory Practice group, was appointed to the 20-member board of directors of Africare, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of people in Africa.

Krilla has extensive foreign policy experience and has spent most of his career working around the globe on trade, development and human rights. As a former senior State Department official who has led U.S. delegations on five continents, drawing on that international experience he offers clients practical solutions to a wide range of global business challenges. Krilla is a member of the Atlantic Council as well as the board of Refugees International, and recently led a mission to Kenya to support Somali refugees resident in that country.

Prior to joining Dentons, Krilla served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor. He led the State Department's corporate social responsibility efforts and created its Office of International Labor Affairs and Corporate Social Responsibility. He was co-chair of the Secretary's Global Internet Freedom Taskforce, which worked with technology companies and a coalition of nongovernmental organizations to press governments around the world on internet freedom of speech issues.

Previously, Krilla also served as regional director for Africa for the International Republican Institute (IRI), chaired by Sen. John McCain, where he oversaw and coordinated programs and election observations in numerous African countries. In 2002, he worked closely with current Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf to coordinate IRI's conference of Liberian opposition parties, civil society, news media and representatives of rebel factions to discuss Liberia's democratic future.

Krilla is an officer in the U.S. Navy Reserves. He earned his JD from Georgetown University Law Center, his master's degree from University of Pennsylvania and his bachelor's degree from Georgetown University.
