Dentons Canada LLP, one of Canada’s leading business and litigation law firms, is pleased to announce that Scott Sweatman has joined the firm’s Vancouver office as a partner and lead of the local Pensions & Benefits practice.

As one of the leading pensions and benefits lawyers in Canada, Scott provides organizations with advice on establishing and sustaining pension, benefit and deferred compensation plans. He counsels clients on regulatory compliance, governance and funding issues, as well as the impact of mergers and acquisitions on these plans. In addition, Scott assists national and multi-national clients and multi-employer plan sponsors with provincial, federal and Income Tax Act compliance.

Scott is a member of the Board of Directors of NAV CANADA, the private sector, non-share capital corporation that owns and operates Canada’s civil air navigation services. He also Chairs NAV CANADA’s pension committee.

Scott was Co-Chair of the Alberta-British Columbia Joint Expert Panel on Pension Standards in 2007–2008, providing recommendations to both Alberta and British Columbia provincial governments for fundamental reforms to pension legislation. He also served on the Alberta and British Columbia Joint Advisory Group, which was established by the Alberta and British Columbia governments to help implement new pension standards legislation based, in part, on the Joint Expert Panel recommendations.

Scott is the past National and Regional Chair of the Canadian Pension & Benefits Institute, past Chair of the Pension, Benefits and Compensation Section of the Canadian Bar Association (British Columbia), past Chair of the Corporate Counsel Section of the Canadian Bar Association (British Columbia), former member of the Pension Advisory Council to the British Columbia Government, and former member of the Trustee Act Modernization Committee of British Columbia.

Scott was recognized in the 2012 edition of The Best Lawyers in Canada in the area of Employee Benefits Law.
