Washington, DC—Dentons and Navigant hosted the Energy Outlook event at the National Press Club in Washington, DC for the fourth consecutive year. The half-day of panel discussions drew approximately 200 industry leaders, members of the diplomatic corps, congressional staff and press.

Washington, DC partner and co-chair of Dentons’ global Energy practice Clint Vince opened the event with introductory remarks, focusing on current disruptions to and rapid transformation of the global energy sector. Special guest Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA), chair of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, set the tone of the day's discussion with an in-depth opening speech detailing the urgent need to update US energy policies. 

The keynote address was delivered by Tom Ridge (R), former Pennsylvania Governor and first Secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security, who examined the critical importance of securing the nation's energy infrastructure from physical and digital attacks. Christopher McGee-Osborne, London partner and co-chair of the global Energy practice, closed the event with a recap of the themes of the day’s panel discussions.

The event featured three panel discussions:

By popular demand, the first panel revisited a feature from last year and addressed "Game Changers in the US Energy Landscape." This discussion covered disruptions facing  the country's energy sector, including its evolution into a net energy exporter, threats to security, developments in clean and renewable technologies and the impact of climate change. Clint Vince moderated the panel, which included:

• Doyle Beneby, CEO of CPS Energy
• Amy Harder, Energy and Environment Reporter, The Wall Street Journal
• Gordon Pickering, Director, Navigant

The second panel, "Markets for Canadian Oil and Gas: One is Never Enough," covered issues related to exports of Canadian oil and gas resources. Senator Doug Black, Q.C., a senior counsel at Dentons, moderated a lively discussion by a panel which included:

• Dan Gagnier, Chair of the Board, International Institute for Sustainable Development
• David J. Manning, Alberta Representative to the United States
• Todd Williams, Managing Director, Navigant

The third panel looked beyond the US and Canada to examine the energy policies of Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean. The panel on "Clean Energy: Shale Gas and Renewables, A Global Perspective" was moderated by Ian Smyth, Managing Director at Navigant and included:

• Arkadiusz Krasnodębski, Dentons' Warsaw office Managing Partner and co-chair of Dentons' global energy practice
• Jose Antonio Postigo Uribe, Partner, Sanchez Devanny
• Neil Parsan, Ambassador of Trinidad and Tobago to the United States and Mexico
