Dentons recently completed a joint internship program with Shanghai Economic Training College and the BC Trade Office in Shanghai. This program, now referred to as The Canadian Program for Senior Shanghai Counsel, allows leading senior in-house counsel from various Shanghai-based state-owned enterprises the opportunity to visit, learn and engage with the Canadian legal community. This year, four in-house counsel members participated, and while much of the joint program was hosted in Vancouver, they were able to visit our offices across Canada during their eight-week stay.

The in-house counsel members included:

1. Ms. Xinyan (Ivon) Gan, General Manager of Legal, Shanghai Pharmaceuticals Holding Co., Ltd (SPH)
2. Ms. Pu (Grace) Gao, Director of Legal, Shanghai Electric Power Transmission & Distribution Group Co., Ltd.
3. Mr. Jie (Jason) Wang, Legal and Compliance Director, SIIC Fund Management Co., Ltd.
4. Mr. Minmin (Oliver) Wang, General Manager of Legal, Shanghai Foreign Service (Group) Co., Ltd.

During this time, Dentons was able to build a close rapport with the members, and arrange meetings with the BC attorney general and board members of the BC International Arbitration Centre. The in-house counsel members had the opportunity not only to learn about Canadian law, but also gain valuable insights into the Chinese legal system.

At the conclusion of the program, the members had presented on various topics, including a comparison of Canadian and Chinese laws and regulations for foreign investment, Chinese labour laws, introduction to the Chinese court systems, and intelligence into state-owned enterprise share transfers.
