Global law firm Dentons has appointed Jesús Varela as Spain Managing Partner for the three year term beginning in 2019. He will lead Dentons’ practice in Spain, and will focus on accelerating the Firm’s growth strategy in that market.

In addition to his new role as Spain Managing Partner, Jesús Varela is also Head of the Real Estate practice in Madrid. His advises on real estate financing, real estate investment and M&A. He has advised a wide range of banks and other lenders, real estate investors and debt traders. He is particularly known in the market for his experience in debt portfolio trades, property financings and private equity deals in the real estate sector. Chambers Europe ranks Varela as a top tier lawyer in Real Estate in Spain, and as a leader in Investment Funds and Banking and Finance. He is also recommended as a leading individual in The Legal 500 EMEA, Best Lawyers and Who’s Who Legal and IFLR 1000.

Varela takes the reins from José María Buxeda, who served as Spain Managing Partner since the law firm he founded, Masons Buxeda Menchén, joined Dentons’ legacy firm Salans in 2007. Buxeda was instrumental in establishing Dentons in the Spanish market and in building up a profitable business. Under his leadership, the Spanish practice achieved double-digit revenue growth in each of the last three years. He will continue to serve as a partner at Dentons, advising clients on corporate and commercial law, M&A, private equity and dispute resolution matters. He is recommended by international legal directories Chambers Europe and Best Lawyers.

Jesús Varela will work closely with Nieves Briz, Dentons’ Barcelona office Managing Partner, who joined the firm in 2018 to lead Dentons’ growth in Barcelona.
