Dentons counsel Pieter-Jan Aerts has co-edited along with Frank Hoogendijk (Osborne Clarke) and Niels Vandezande (Timelex) a book called “Smart contracts: an overview from a legal perspective". The book, written in Dutch, examines the legal aspects of smart contracts under Belgian and EU law. In addition, Pieter-Jan Aerts wrote the “Introduction to smart contracts” chapter and the chapter on the “Contractual analysis of smart contracts”.

Smart contracts: an overview from a legal perspective offers legal professionals critical insight into one of the potentially most disruptive applications of this decade. A smart contract is a code or software program, based on blockchain technology, which allows users to execute agreed transactions automatically without human intervention. This enables the market to carry out large numbers of automated transactions, such as automatic payments to open a shared car or hotel room, register property, provide proof of authorship, optimize insurance contracts, or activate track-and-trace applications, etc.

The book provides insight into smart contracts as a contemporary legal phenomenon, including existing and possible future applications. It examines the concepts of blockchain and smart contracts, and their consequences for financial, corporate, insurance, copyright, consumer protection, notarial and private international law.

The book will be officially launched at a webinar on August 27, 2020, in which the authors will share their key insights.
