Dentons Davis Brown recently joined the Children’s Rights Clinic at Drake University Law School to co-host the second annual LGBTQ+ Free Legal Clinic.
On a Saturday in April, Dentons and Drake partnered with law students, professors, and volunteers on campus to help members of the Iowa LGBTQ+ community with legal name changes, name and sex-designation changes on birth certificates, healthcare, and funeral directives. By the end of the day, the team helped 40 LGBTQ+ Iowans, a 42% increase over last year.
To make the free clinic a reality, over a dozen Dentons lawyers and staff underwent training and donated their Saturday to help facilitate. Leading up to the clinic, others assisted behind the scenes as well.
Notably, the student group DrakOUTlaws notably fundraised over $4,000 to cover the filing fees for everyone who needed it. Other community partners included Central Iowa Rainbow Families, Common Love Iowa, Iowa Safe Schools, Iowa Trans Mutual Aid Fund, and One Iowa.
At Dentons, inclusion and diversity are not just ancillary values. We are committed to achieving real change in the places where we live and work through collaboration with others and community engagement. Learn more about our inclusion and diversity efforts.
