Eric Ferrer is counsel in Dentons' Honolulu office. Mr. Ferrer is a trial lawyer, having practiced law for more than 35 years. He began his career as trial counsel at the Law Office of Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr., becoming a managing partner of the firm's Los Angeles office. Initially distinguishing himself in cases involving civil rights actions against government entities at the municipal, state and federal levels, Mr. Ferrer has represented clients suffering serious injuries in such diverse areas as vehicular accidents, business torts, franchise disputes, products liability, premises liability, aviation accidents, insurance bad faith, police misconduct and class actions. He has also represented professional athletes in arbitrations before the Major League Baseball Association, including Gary Sheffield. The following is a sampling of verdicts Mr. Ferrer has obtained during the course of his career as trial counsel: Schweitzer v. Lexington Insurance Company, US$51.4 million; Diaz v. City of Los Angeles, US$9.4 million; Robertson v. City of Los Angeles, US$3.0 million; Rose v. City of Los Angeles, US$2.1 million; Johnson v. State of California, US$2.4 million; Pierson v. City of Los Angeles, US$2.2 million; Wilson v. Koomie Son, US$1.8 million.
Mr. Ferrer has also handled cases yielding large settlements against universities, government agencies, and school districts including Will v. Northwestern University, US$16 million; Garner v. State of Hawaii, US$14 million; 68th Street Students v. Los Angeles Unified School District, US$6.1 million; Scott v. County of Los Angeles, US$5 million; Daniels v. City of West Covina, US$3.7 million; Paz v. City of El Monte, US$3.0 million; Goodman v. LAUSD, US$1.6 million; and Childs v. City of Denver, US$1.3 million.
Mr. Ferrer received his JD from UCLA, and his BA in philosophy and MS in urban and policy sciences from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He is licensed to practice law in Hawai`i, California and New York.
Mr. Ferrer is married and the proud father of two children, a son who is product manager in a tech firm in the Bay Area, and a daughter who is a recent graduate of Scripps College. When he is not planning and executing trial strategy on behalf of his clients, he can be found on his lanai playing Mbira, a magical musical instrument from Zimbabwe.
