The government has just released its response to the House of Commons and House of Lords Joint Committee's report on the draft Registration of Overseas Entities Bill.
It has been more than 18 months since the government outlined its intention to implement a ban on the sale of leasehold houses and to introduce a cap on ground rents in residential long leases. Now, after a series of consultations, the government has issued its latest response (Response) to stakeholder feedback setting out in more detail how it intends to implement these changes.
Landlords will be buoyed by the High Court decision in TFS Stores Limited v. The Designer Retail Outlet Centres (Mansfield) General Partner Ltd  EWHC 1363 (Ch) which took a pragmatic approach to interpreting the rules on contracting out commercial leases from the security of tenure provisions of Part II of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954 (1954 Act).

Dentons has advised VLC Renewables, the Jersey-based fund established by Low Carbon and Vitol, on its investment in the first phase of a 500MW onshore wind farm at Zaporizhia in Ukraine. Developed by LongWing Energy, the wind farm is expected to be one of the top five largest operating onshore wind generators in Europe capable of powering approximately 780,000 homes.
Dentons has advised Sports Direct on the freehold sale of its headquarters and distribution centre in Derbyshire to Malaysian pension fund Kwasa Logix Sportivo for £120 million. It has subsequently taken out a 15-year lease and will continue to operate from the 1.82m sq ft site.
Dentons has advised Aliter Capital-backed engineering services business Edwin James Group, which is headquartered in Glasgow, on its acquisition of Jex Engineering, a subsidiary of listed manufacturing and specialist services business Redhall Group, which has been sold out of administration.
