Giorgio Bovenzi is a partner in Dentons' Restructuring, Insolvency and Bankruptcy practice and co-heads the firm's Financial Institutions sector. He is ranked by Chambers (US Nationwide) and by The Legal 500 (US) and has more than 20 years of experience in credit, banking, regulatory, derivatives, bankruptcy and cross-border insolvency law in multiple jurisdictions around the world. During the past 10 years, leveraging complementary experience in multijurisdictional credit and regulatory risk management as well as cross-border and international insolvency, Giorgio's practice has focused on advising global financial institutions and companies in connection with their cross-border financial transactions, the evaluation of their cross-border risk profiles and the implementation of appropriate risk mitigation techniques.
Giorgio's global credit risk management practice combines an unusual mix of expertise in multiple areas, including credit, banking, regulatory, derivatives, U.S. bankruptcy and cross-border insolvency law, applied in multiple jurisdictions around the world. Giorgio advises global banks in the cross-border structuring of their financial products for the global markets (e.g., prime brokerage, derivatives, securities lending, repos, asset custody) and in the evaluation of the credit risk represented by the specific product and/or the bank's counterparty. In these bank circles, he is well known for his familiarity with credit risk mitigation techniques, such as collateralization and setoff / netting, and the insolvency laws of a large number of foreign jurisdictions which may affect enforceability. In the course of this practice, Giorgio coordinates and seeks assistance from a network of country counsel from more than 90 jurisdictions worldwide on foreign banking, credit and insolvency matters.
Clients view Giorgio's team as "top-notch," providing "a 'very impressive service' to clients seeking guidance on the regulatory issues impacting financing institutions in the context of cross-border insolvency and global credit risk." Giorgio is described as the "'thoughtful and solutions-oriented’ team head, …'aware of the regulatory developments in the market'" and "unique in his 'understanding of the regulatory and risk management concerns of banks and ability to produce multi-jurisdictional solutions.'" - The Legal 500
Additionally, Giorgio represents global financial institutions and multi-national debtors in complex U.S. and non-U.S. plenary and ancillary insolvency matters, and in multi-jurisdictional out-of-court restructurings where a hands-on understanding of the enforceability of foreign collateral is critical. His work on international insolvency matters has received broad recognition and awards.
Giorgio is also an adjunct professor at Fordham University School of Law.
Chambers ranks Giorgio as a "noted practitioner" in Financial Services Regulation: Banking (Compliance) in US Nationwide (2017). He is nationally recommended by The Legal 500 for his work in Financial Services Regulation.
