You will no doubt have read countless reports about the Taylor Review published recently and you’ll be glad to hear that we don’t propose to explore the differences between a 'worker' and the suggested new category of 'dependant contractor' (largely because it really isn’t clear what those differences, if any, would be) nor do we propose to get into the debate about whether the recommendations are good or bad for those engaged in the so-called “gig economy”. Instead, we have picked out the following key recommendations which we found interesting from an HR perspective:
At the moment these are of course only recommendations. We don’t expect new legislation to be rushed through, given that the Government has its hands rather full with Brexit preparations.
Overall, the Review acknowledged the importance of flexibility in the workplace, as well as the need to ensure the labour market remains dynamic enough to adapt to new business models. It seems then, that the gig economy business model is here to stay.
