Fernando Jimenez de Arechaga and Alfredo Arocena, members of our Infrastructure and Energy team, authored the Uruguayan chapter of Lexology Panoramic’s Rail Transport 2025.

Uruguay has recently inaugurated the Ferrocarril Central Project, consistent in the rehabilitation and maintenance of 273 km of rail line connecting the port of Montevideo and the Paso de los Toros city. The project is considered the major investment in public infrastructure in the country’s history and has revived rail transport as a method of transport in Uruguay.

At Dentons Jiménez de Aréchaga, Fernando Jimenez de Arechaga and Alfredo Arocena, have advised the Project’s concessionaire company, Grupo Vía Central SA, through its whole stages including the PPP contract, the different financings, and the Project development.

Based on their acquired experience, through this publication the authors provide an overview of the structure of the railway industry in Uruguay, including its regulatory bodies, its principal players and the regulation on safety and competition.
