Chicago—Lawyers from Dentons' Environmental practice have secured approval from the American Carbon Registry (ACR) for a unique methodology to measure carbon offsets used by manufacturers of polyurethane foam. The methodology is designed to provide incentives to use low-Global Warming Potential (GWP) blowing agents during the manufacturing process. The co-creator of the approved methodology, "Emission Reduction Measurement and Monitoring for the Transition to Advanced Formulation Blowing Agents in Foam Manufacturing and Use," is Foam Supplies, Inc. who created the patented technology.
Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are commonly used foam blowing agents in the manufacture of foams used in refrigerators and freezers, in industrial refrigeration systems and refrigerated transport, in marine applications such as boats and buoys, and in heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
HFCs are considered short-lived climate pollutants and also one of the fastest growing sources of GHG emissions globally. Mitigating emissions of HFC is important for limiting near term climate impacts. Alternatives to these HFC-based blowing agents are available but are not commonly used in certain segments of the foam manufacturing industry due to cost and other challenges to adoption.
"ACR’s approval of this methodology is an important step to reward early action and facilitate meaningful and significant reductions in emissions from HFCs in foam blowing agents,” said Jeff Fort, partner at Dentons. "We applaud the concerted effort between our attorneys and the Foam Supplies, Inc. team in creating a valuable tool that will help improve the climate."
The methodology is intended to provide access to carbon finance to increase uptake of available advanced technologies and accelerate a transition to low-GWP blowing agents in these sectors more rapidly than would otherwise occur. Currently, this methodology presents a low-cost approach to reducing greenhouse gases.
