Dentons partner Samuel Maizel has been selected to be profiled in the inaugural issue of the Southern California Business Magazine, a product of the LA Times’ Brand Publishing division, which comes out on March 28. The first issue will focus on banking and finance. Resident in the Los Angeles office, Maizel is a member of Dentons’ Restructuring, Insolvency and Bankruptcy group.

Maizel’s practice includes bankruptcy matters and financial restructuring in and out of court in all industries, and he leads the Firm's health care industry restructuring efforts nationwide. Most notably, Maizel recently concluded co-leading the representation of Verity Health System of California and 16 related entities, including six acute care hospitals, in the second-largest hospital bankruptcy case in American history; at its height, Verity carried more than $1.4 billion in debt. As co-lead counsel, Maizel helped craft and execute the unique, innovative legal arguments that consistently won favorable rulings from the Bankruptcy Court over the objections of the California Attorney General’s Office and the California Medi-Cal program. Also in the past year he was lead counsel on the successful chapter 11 restructuring of Astria Health, a chain of three hospitals in Yakima, Washington. 

Before joining Dentons, Maizel was a partner in a national bankruptcy firm, and previous to that he represented the federal government in bankruptcy, district and appellate courts nationwide as a trial attorney in the US Department of Justice's Commercial Litigation Branch. He has also served in the US Army Judge Advocate General's Corps, including service in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, for which he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. Previously, he served as an infantry officer in the 101st Airborne Division and the 3rd US Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard).

As the only lawyer in the United States ranked by Chambers USA and by Best Lawyers in America in both the health care and bankruptcy categories, Maizel is a nationally recognized authority on the issues that arise in the restructuring of health care industry entities, including nonprofits. He is a member of the peer-selected American College of Bankruptcy. Every year since 2007, he has been named a "Super Lawyer" in an annual regionwide peer survey, an honor bestowed on only five percent of Southern California lawyers. He holds an AV Preeminent Peer Rating, Martindale-Hubbell's highest recognition for ethical standards and legal ability.
