Muscat—Building on Dentons' commitment to fostering Oman's next generation, the Firm recently partnered with outdoor-education organisation Outward Bound Oman (OBO) to mentor a group of students from the German University of Technology in Muscat taking part in OBO's Next Generation course.
Held in Jebel Akhdar, the four-day course challenged a group of 12 male and female students of varying backgrounds through an adventurous journey in the mountains to help build confidence, leadership, collaboration and problem-solving skills.
Dentons' Muscat-based lawyer Abdulaziz Al-Harthy worked with the students to provide guidance in the areas of youth employment, advantages of working in the private sector, entrepreneurship and the skills required to succeed in the workplace. Al-Harthy said, "It was a pleasure to continue Dentons' support for the Next Generation course. OBO is the only organisation of its type in Oman which provides an invaluable opportunity for this age group as they prepare to enter the workforce."
One of the students who took part in the course added, "Participating in this course has helped me both personally and professionally. I have been able to both explore and improve myself. In just four days I gained skills that I could never have got from four years of study."
Established in 2009, OBO is the first non-profit outdoor educational initiative in the Middle East region. Working in close partnership with the Ministry of Education/National Career Guidance Council, the OBO courses provide young Omanis with exposure to the key skills needed for building a career.
As a founding member of OBO, Dentons has provided pro bono legal advice to the organisation for over nine years on a variety of projects, most recently including the construction of OBO's new Muscat headquarters as well as OBO's Desert Training Centre in the Sharqiyah Sands, the first purpose-built centre for outdoor learning, which will be entirely powered by renewable energy.
Speaking about the Firm’s longstanding support for OBO, Dentons Muscat-based partner Andrew Figgins said, "We are delighted to build upon our support for Outward Bound, as it continues to play an important role in empowering Omani youth and developing the nation’s human resources in accordance with Oman’s Vision 2020."
