Dentons is proud to congratulate Dr. Bob Tarantino, Counsel in the Firm’s Media and Entertainment law group, on earning his Doctor of Laws degree from Osgoode Hall Law School.

Bob’s dissertation examined open content copyright licensing in the creative and cultural industries with respect to marketing and distribution decisions. His three-year-long research led him to produce a predictable and consistent assessment process for considering the use of open content licenses for creative expression, which has fascinated academics in this space for some time. Bob will receive his Doctor of Laws at this year’s October convocation at York University.

Bob’s practice focuses on the interface between the entertainment industries and intellectual property law. He advises a wide variety of clients—including artists, independent producers, Canadian distributors, and foreign studios and financiers—at every stage of the creative process. The dissertation that led to Bob’s impressive academic achievement will benefit clients in the creative industries by facilitating their decision-making processes when considering whether to release their projects using open content licenses.

Bob holds graduate degrees in law from Osgoode Hall Law School and the University of Oxford, and has been an adjunct lecturer at Osgoode Hall, Queen’s University Faculty of Law and the Western University Faculty of Law. He previously served as the acting co-director of IP Osgoode’s Intellectual Property Law and Technology Intensive Program. He is also the Contributing Editor for Canadian Film & Television Business & Legal Practice. Dr. Tarantino plays an active role within the legal community, and is currently serving as a member of the OBA Board of Directors in the role of Secretary; his work with the OBA has included serving on the OBA’s Governance Committee, Pro Bono Committee and Council.
