Indianapolis—Winfield Ong, an experienced federal prosecutor and former Assistant US Attorney in the Southern District of Indiana, has joined Dentons Bingham Greenebaum’s Indianapolis office as Of Counsel. Ong focuses his practice on white-collar crimes and is a member of the Dentons US White Collar and Government Investigations practice.

Ong spent nearly 30 years at the Southern District of Indiana US Attorney’s office, where he served in various roles, including as Chief of the Criminal Division from 2014 to 2018. He was nominated by President Barack Obama in 2016 to fill a judicial vacancy in the Southern District of Indiana.

Ong worked in both the Civil and Criminal divisions while at the US Attorney’s office, giving him insight and experience in a variety of investigations and trials. More recently, he prosecuted white-collar crimes, specifically health care fraud and corporate and securities fraud.

“Winfield Ong’s government experience is a tremendous asset to our clients facing a demanding government investigation or criminal charges,” said J. Ong was the lead prosecutor in the high-profile wire fraud and securities fraud case against Tim Durham, James Cochran and Rick Snow, who were indicted for allegedly stealing assets from their company, Fair Finance, resulting in 5,000 people losing more than $200 million. The three were found guilty and sentenced to 50 years, 25 years, and 10 years, respectively.

Ong was recognized in 2014 by the Executive Office of United States Attorneys with the prestigious Department of Justice’s Director’s Award for his work on the case, which was the largest white-collar fraud sentence imposed in the Southern District of Indiana at the time of the award.

At the US Attorney’s Office, Ong also served as Grand Jury Coordinator from 1998 to 2010, led the office’s asset forfeiture program from 1996 to 2009, and was the criminal coordinator the Health Care Fraud Task Force from 2002 to 2010.
