Dentons Davis Brown and Drake University Law School recently co-hosted a free LGBTQ+ legal clinic on Drake’s campus. Dentons and Drake partnered with law students to help members of the Iowa LGBTQ+ community with legal name changes, name and sex-designation changes on birth certificates, healthcare, and funeral directives.

The team helped 28 LGBTQ+ Iowans. Shareholder Breanna Young said, “We saw a real need to step up and help empower and protect people by helping them get their legal documents in place.”

One client shared, “I will have this new name for the rest of my life, and I never thought I’d get to say that because I would never be able to afford a lawyer who can help me.”

To make the free clinic a reality, over a dozen Dentons lawyers and staff underwent training and donated their Saturday to help facilitate. Leading up to the clinic, others assisted behind the scenes as well.
