“Well, I think it must be common sense that ESG is a goal that can only be achieved. ...” In the 7th episode of the series, Sabine Wieduwilt interviews Jan Hellner, author of the chapters “Hotel” and “Student Accommodation” for the book Implementing ESG into Real Estate Contracts.” Jan shares his journey into the hospitality industry and discusses key trends in hospitality, and how ESG is impacting development, investment and operations across the sector. “And I even think the importance of ESG goes beyond just the law and the contract; rather, it affects the success of society in general. So, we must all come to a more ESG-compliant way of life … and make real estate assets and student accommodation more ESG compliant. It’s just a small piece in this big puzzle.”

About our guest

Jan Hellner is a partner in Dentons’ Berlin office. He has more than 15 years PQE specialized in real estate with a sector focus on the hospitality industry. Jan advises all kinds of players in the hospitality sector, such as private investors, institutional funds, project developers and hotel and hostel operators. Representing both lessors and lessees in hotel leases, he has first-hand knowledge of the growing importance of ESG in leases and other operating models for hotels. An active member of the “contract workshop” (Vertragswerkstatt) of the Arbeitskreis Hotelimmobilien (Hotel and Real Estate Working Group), an independent, cross-professional association that includes both owners and operators of hotel properties, Jan knows the challenges associated with the implementation of ESG standards. In addition to hotels, working with student housing developers has become an important part of Jan’s work in recent years.

It describes the general principles of ESG and ESG regulation for contract drafting and then reviews their implementation in specific types of contracts. In addition, the authors address specific issues relating to different types of property use such as office, retail, logistics, hospitality and data centers. The work focuses on the ESG EU standard so that the content can be transferred for the work in different EU countries.
