Katie serves as Counsel in Dentons’ Real Estate practice, with experience in all facets of commercial real estate projects, including acquisitions, dispositions, development, post-construction, workouts and collateral recovery. She began her legal career in Denver, where she experienced the 2008 downturn in the real estate market and gained invaluable experience defending mortgage lenders before state courts and U.S. district courts in all stages of collateral recovery, and advising clients on how to handle distressed properties and loans. Katie has also represented oil and gas developers with interests in numerous Shale Basins, which involved the intricate review of patent forward title abstracts, collaboration with landmen to resolve title issues that arose during the course of title evaluation, and preparation of drilling and division order title opinions.
After moving to Kansas City, Katie transitioned from private practice to in-house legal roles, serving as underwriting counsel for the national commercial services division of a nationwide title insurance company, which strongly informs her ability to weigh hypothetical liability against realistic risk exposure, and as corporate counsel to a $6.8 billion real estate investment trust company, where she advised on day-to-day property management issues including lease and mortgage compliance, asset optimization, redevelopment, tenant improvements, and asset disposition. During this time, Katie also honed her skills in negotiating indemnities, escrow agreements and other instruments utilized to eliminate clouds on title.
Katie joined Dentons in 2021, and specializes in pre-development diligence review, utilizing her diverse experience and skillset to implement practical and timely solutions to issues that arise during the course of complex commercial real estate transactions, allowing her clients to move forward with their projects and fulfill their goals.
