London—Dentons is pleased to have hosted a special evening event organised by the Firm's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) and Allies network, known as GLOW, with former British boxing manager and promoter Kellie Maloney as its keynote speaker.
The event – 'Fighting to become myself: an evening with Kellie Maloney' – took place on 28 June 2017 in London and was well attended by staff and clients. The evening coincides with Pride in London 2017, the biggest LGBT+ event in the UK, which is taking place from 24 June to 9 July 2017.
Kellie Maloney lived several decades as Frank Maloney, the boxing promoter and manager who, amongst other triumphs, guided Lennox Lewis and David Haye to boxing world titles. But from an early age, Kellie felt she had been born in the wrong body. At the Dentons event, she spoke about how she overcame decades of inner turmoil and embarked on her journey to live as the woman she always felt she was. She also pointed out how the support of Allies was so important to the transitioning process and beyond and shared anecdotes of her life in boxing.
Nick Mott, Dentons' UK Diversity and Inclusion partner, said, "We were delighted to welcome Kellie Maloney as the keynote speaker at GLOW's 2017 flagship event, part of our Transgender programme launched earlier this year which included new policy and guidance on transitioning at work. Diversity and inclusion are at our core and are driving principles behind Dentons’ vision and strategy: to provide clients inventive, sophisticated solutions, while sustaining a rich and vibrant workplace, and promoting positive social change. Kellie's story is truly inspirational and we are grateful that she took the time to share her experiences with us."
Earlier this year Dentons rose up the national rankings in Stonewall's Top 100 Employers 2017, a ranking of the highest performing UK organisations in the campaign group's Workplace Equality Index, to 17th place overall. The Firm was also recognised as one of the best performing law firms in the UK.
In May 2017, Dentons announced the launch of its Global LGBT+ Network, a firm-wide group dedicated to connecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, nonbinary, queer and questioning colleagues, as well as their allies. The Global LGBT+ network encompasses all the regions of the Firm and supplements existing regional affinity groups, such as GLOW in the UK.
