When Bingham Greenebaum Doll LLP associate Justin Hage learned the founder of the successful Launch Fishers co-working space was planning on starting a downtown Indianapolis location, he knew his firm needed to get involved with the new space. Thanks to the vision of the BGD team, the firm has been a proud sponsor of Launch Indy since it opened in late September 2017.

Launch Indy provides space for entrepreneurs and startups to flex their creative muscles and be part of a community while also driving economic development. Hage, a member of the firm’s Economic Development Department in the Indianapolis office, knows new companies like these can grow fast and without much fanfare, but they’ll need legal help ranging from intellectual property to labor and employment.

“By partnering with a co-working space, and by our lawyers having an active presence in the space and sponsoring events, we can develop relationships with early-stage companies and add value to the community by helping them understand and navigate particular legal issues as they grow,” Hage said.

One way BGD intends to develop relationships with members of Launch Indy is by hosting events, including informal lunches where a lawyer will bring in pizza and speak on a particular topic, such as patents, employment law, or venture capital. The firm also aims to have several social gatherings over the course of the year for members and tenants of the building, The Union 525. Besides Launch Indy, The Union 525 provides office space to other tech companies of various sizes.

Katie Birge, the executive director at Launch Indy, said it’s helpful to have attorneys from the firm present in the space and available to answer member questions.

“Bingham Greenebaum Doll’s sponsorship is beneficial for our members because the attorneys can provide their expertise to our members as they get their businesses up and running and encounter legal questions as they grow,” Birge said.

BGD plans to hold regular office hours at the Launch Indy space, allowing members to take some time to sit with a lawyer and discuss legal issues they may be facing.
