On June 16, 2022, the Canadian government tabled Bill C-27 “An Act to enact the Consumer Privacy Protection Act, the Personal Information and Data Protection Tribunal Act and the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act and to make consequential and related amendments to other Acts,” which includes the proposed Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA). AIDA builds upon the Canadian government’s stated desire to encourage the responsible adoption of AI systems that are “human-centric and grounded in human rights, inclusion, diversity, innovation and economic growth” by establishing Canada-wide requirements for the design, development, use and provision of AI systems.

This insight provides a summary of the key provisions of AIDA applicable to Canadian businesses, and discusses potential associated costs that may be incurred by these businesses to comply with its requirements.
