A few of the interesting outcomes from the discussion are:

• 92 per cent of the attendees agree that the UK needs a new environmental watchdog after Brexit. As yet, the 25 Year Environment Plan has not provided any clarity on what this watchdog will look like; however, the consultation on the new watchdog is planned to open in early 2018.
• 30 per cent of attendees do not think that the UK should sign up to the REACH regime after Brexit. In 2016/2017, the Environmental Audit Committee conducted an inquiry on the future of chemicals regulation and recommended that the UK seek convergence on chemical regulations between the EU and UK, not divergence. As such, this statistic is thought-provoking. The Environmental Audit Committee has recommended that the UK should seek to remain a member of the ECHA in order to remain under the REACH regulation, and maintain the existing registrations and authorisations of chemicals to protect supply chains and avoid the disruption of trade.
• Plastics was the overriding concern for the people in the room. We will follow up on this issue, and look out for the consultation on single-use plastics that is planned for early 2018.

The breadth of the 25 Year Environment Plan is large and inevitably will affect us all, in both a personal and a corporate sense. We look forward to hosting more discussions with you on this topic once the finer details of the implementation of this Plan are released.
