The global pandemic significantly disrupted the US economy, particularly affecting the "back to the city" movement that began in the late 1990s. The ensuing shutdown, fear of infection, and rise of remote work had profound impacts on walkable urban places (WalkUPs). From 2020-2021, many WalkUPs experienced a "doom loop" of decreasing foot traffic, real estate occupancy, valuations, and public tax revenues, leading to reduced public safety, street-level vitality, and increased crime and homelessness. Concerns arose that this doom loop might undermine the early 21st-century urban revival.

As the importance of cities grows, they must square the circle between creating thriving economies and meeting society’s needs. This discussion explored how cities can reimagine their real estate footprint strategies that tackle key issues such as affordable housing, climate change and public safety.
