Moscow—Akylbek Kussainov, Head of the Competition practice in Kazakhstan, and Valeria Ponomareva, Moscow Associate, presented at the forum devoted to antitrust legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Eurasian Economic Union, held in Astana.

Akylbek spoke about competition issues to be considered when concluding distribution agreements within the common market of medicines in the Eurasian Economic Union. In addition to being a speaker, Akylbek moderated a session on the Eurasian Economic Commission’s role in antitrust regulation within the EEU. Valeria delivered a speech on ‘Key changes to the antitrust legislation in Russia’.

The event was organized by the Centre for Development and Protection of Competition Policy, in cooperation with the non-commercial partnership Competition Promotion in the CIS and the L.N.Gumilyov Eurasian National University. The Committee on Regulation of Natural Monopolies and Competition Protection of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of National Economy supported the event.

The conference sessions were devoted to the following topics:

• Eurasian Economic Commission’s role in antitrust regulation within the EEU
• Interview with the Judge of the Eurasian Economic Union court
• Antitrust legislation of Russia and other member-countries of the EEU
• The latest novelties in Kazakhstan’s antitrust legislation

The conference panels featured high-profile speakers, including representatives of the Eurasian Economic Commission, the antitrust authorities of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia, as well as leading competition law experts.

Based on the results of the forum, proposed amendments to some legislative acts of the Republic of Kazakhstan concerning competition will be submitted to state bodies.
