Kansas City—Dentons, the world’s largest law firm, announces today that Stephen McAllister has joined the Firm’s Litigation practice as a counsel in the Kansas City office.
McAllister is a seasoned appellate litigator, having served as the first and only solicitor of the state of Kansas, and as the State’s Solicitor General from 2007-2018. McAllister has a stellar record in his U.S. Supreme Court practice where he has argued nine cases and notched several victories for Kansas in cases such as Kansas v. Ventris, McKune v. Lile and most recently in Kansas v. Carr. He also successfully presented oral argument as an amicus for the States in support of the plaintiffs in OneOK v. Learjet, which held the plaintiffs’ state antitrust claims were not preempted by the federal Natural Gas Act. No stranger to that Court, McAllister clerked for both Justice Clarence Thomas and Justice Byron White at the Supreme Court, as well as for Judge Richard Posner at the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Most recently, he served as the US Attorney for the District of Kansas.
“Stephen adds immediate firepower to our appellate practice,” said Sandy Hauser, head of Dentons US’ Litigation practice. “His background and connections throughout the Midwest and in Washington, DC, boost our ability to argue appeals in the U.S. Supreme Court and in state and federal courts across the country. His addition is a perfect fit for our team of former law clerks, federal and state appellate judges and former government officials from the US Department of Justice and US attorneys' offices.”
McAllister, who remains a professor of law at the University of Kansas School of Law, joins others in Dentons’ Kansas City office who are part of KU’s law faculty. A respected teacher, scholar and appellate lawyer, he received the Dean Frederick J. Moreau Award in 1997, a W.T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence in 1999 and the Steeples Award for Service to Kansans in 2008.
McAllister earned both his JD, Order of the Coif, and his BA from the University of Kansas.
