Critical developments in data

The digital revolution is altering the global economy and shifting how businesses function. Companies are adopting transformative technologies to gain a deeper understanding of customers, market, competitors and trends. This digital transformation creates enormous opportunities and a constellation of risks, many of them new. At the center of the digital revolution is Data; Data is now the most valuable resource in the world, beating out oil, according to The Economist. With 97 percent of businesses using data to power their business opportunities and 76 percent of businesses using data as an integral part of forming a business strategy. The panelist covered the Digital Charter, breaches and the PC, vendor risk management and the intersection of data and privilege.

From litigation to arbitration: What your business needs to know 

Canadian courts are continually revisiting what types of disputes can be arbitrated (and why!). In addition, arbitral rules are routinely revised to promote efficiency and differentiate one institution from another. This requires lawyers to give careful consideration to their dispute resolution clauses. Exemptions from the work permit requirement

Foreign nationals frequently enter Canada for business-related reasons. Some activities can be performed without a work permit and some cannot. In addition, foreign nationals seeking entry to Canada can may be found inadmissible for even minor offences, such as a single DUI.  This panel explored the following issues:

• Activities that do not require a work permit;
• An overview of work permit categories; and
• Inadmissibility to Canada and available relief.
