Effective May 25, 2018, the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) places substantial responsibility on companies who handle and process the personal data of European Union residents. Any company that deals with an EU resident's personal data is subject to the requirements of the GDPR, and may be subject to penalties for noncompliance—regardless of where that company is based, has operations or conducts business activities.
