Bribery and corruption are prohibited in all countries of the world. But, the scope of laws and their enforcement may differ from one country to another. Management must be aware and understand the laws in which their company operates. And they must take adequate measure to prevent their employees from breaching such laws to protect them and their company.

Compliance requirements, data privacy regulation and labor law.

Providing an intake channel for whistleblower reports is required by modern anti-bribery laws and international compliance standards. It is an important element of an effective Compliance Management System (CMS). Specific laws protect whistleblowers against retaliation and set requirements for hotlines. Data privacy regulations apply when reports are processed. Works councils and unions may need to get involved when implementing an intake channel; same for public authorities in various countries.

EU countries had until 17 December 2021 to implement the new EU Whistleblower Directive. However, only a few countries have implemented the Directive and this has caused uncertainty amongst multinationals operating in the EU.
