Dubai—Leading global law firm Dentons recently hosted a gathering in Dubai of banking, projects and construction specialists from across a number of industries to consider both the opportunities and challenges facing major projects across the region.
Regional governments have begun to put the necessary frameworks in place to facilitate PPPs and to drive an increased flow of PPP projects, with new PPP laws for Dubai and Kuwait this year as well as a new 5 year plan in Oman to encourage the use of PPPs. The forum considered the new opportunities presented by the new PPP laws in both Dubai, which comes into effect this month, and Kuwait, which came into effect earlier this year.
Andrew Jones, partner and Head of Construction in the Middle East at Dentons, added: "As governments consider their various options to finance major projects, including PPP, the potential for project disputes still exist. Lessons learned from previous projects can be used better to shape risk allocation and improve the structuring of bankable projects. Rigorous review of contracts is key at the planning stages both in avoiding disputes and in preparation for swift resolution."
Speakers included Dentons partners Ian Dalley and Udayan Mukherjee, former English High Court Judge and current arbitrator Sir Vivian Ramsey QC as well as barrister Lucy Garrett of Keating Chambers.
