The Committees are a fundamental part of the International Trademark Association, which carries out a selection process every two years among its members to integrate its 35 committees. At Dentons Larraín Rencoret we congratulate our partner Mercedes Londoño for having been selected to join the Internet Committee, which includes digital platforms and their regulation, as of January 2022. In this way, she joins our partner Carolina del Río, who has been part of the INTA Parallel Imports Committee since 2020.

What is the role of the Committees in the International Trademark Association? Expert advice for policy development, communication of key industry issues, among others. The Committees are divided into three areas: Promotion, Resources, and Communications.

The Internet Committee, for which our partner Mercedes Londoño has been selected, is part of the Promotion area. Its mission is specifically related to the protection of trademarks in cyberspace and web domains. They monitor and analyze the development of cases, treaties, legislation, and regulations in various jurisdictions, related to the internet, social networks, and mobile applications, among others. With this information, they make recommendations to the directory. They also work closely with ICANN, the non-profit corporation that manages Internet addresses.

Mercedes joins our partner Carolina del Río, a member of another INTA committee since 2020. Carolina, the regional leader of Intellectual Property, Technology, and Privacy in Dentons, is part of the Parallel Imports Committee, whose mission is to review cases, legislation, and regulations related to the importation of legitimate but previously licensed products to a country, without the authorization of the owner of that license. They also propose measures and reports in this subject to the directory.

This year, more than 3,900 INTA members applied to the different committees of the institution, so at Dentons Larraín Rencoret we are proud of the selection of Mercedes. “I believe that participating in these committees is a great opportunity for Dentons Larraín Rencoret to stay at the forefront of regulatory developments in an industry as dynamic as the internet and its associated digital services.
