Edmonton—Dentons is pleased to announce that our partner Ian Wachowicz has been appointed by Edmonton City Council as Chair of the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board (SDAB).

In addition to presiding over hearings before the SDAB, Ian is responsible for the review and evaluation of all members of the SDAB, participate in the training of the new and existing members, as well as report to City Council on issues before the SDAB that may require bylaw amendments.

The SDAB, an independent, quasi-judicial body established by City Council, hears appeals from people who have been affected by decisions handed down by the Development Authority under the Zoning Bylaw and the Subdivision Authority under the Subdivision Authority Bylaw. The SDAB’s decisions are final and cannot be overturned unless the board makes an error in some aspect of law or jurisdiction.

This appointment not only reflects Ian’s impartiality when confronted with contentious complex real estate matters, but also reinforces how he is held in the highest regard by those in the real estate sector and legal profession at large.
