On January 15, the amendments to the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan "On Personal Data" dated 2 July 2019 No. O’RQ-547 have been published. These changes will come into force on April 16, 2021 (“Data Localization Law”).

The Data Localization Law provides for the following:

1. The personal data of the citizens of Uzbekistan must be processed “on technical means physically located on the territory of Uzbekistan” and on the databases duly registered with the data protection authority in Uzbekistan;
2. The data localization requirement applies to the data processing using information technologies, including via the Internet;
3. The compliance obligation is with the owner and/or operator of the database. The owner is any person who owns the database that includes the personal data. The operator is any person who processes the personal data;
4. The data localization requirement applies to collection, systematization and storage.
