Marcel heads the Banking and Finance practice in Amsterdam and is co-head of the Europe Financial Institutions sector. His experience covers a broad range of finance and restructuring transactions. Marcel is a member of Dentons’ Real Estate and Energy groups and focuses on real estate finance, (renewable) energy projects, export finance, sustainable finance and leveraged finance. He acts for both lenders and borrowers on domestic and cross-border transactions.

Experience

Triodos Energy Transition Europe Fund: Advised TETEF on its investment in SolarAccess, which will finance rooftop solar assets for Wavin in France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Sweden and the UK. This investment contributes to the Fund’s sustainable investment objective of increasing the proportion of zero emission energy in Europe while also supporting entrepreneurs to accelerate the energy transition.
Rabobank and Triodos Renewables Transition Europe Fund: Assisted Rabobank in the project financing for the construction of the largest battery (energy storage project) in the Netherlands: GIGA Buffalo. This project, unique for the Netherlands, will have a capacity of 24 MW and 48 MWh of storage capacity.
Triodos Renewables Transition Europe Fund: Advising Triodos in providing a subordinated loan to Giga Rhino, a utility-scale Lithium-ion energy storage system.
GIGA Storage: Advised GIGA Storage in relation to the acquisition of a new location in Delfzijl on the former plots of Aldel, including a closed distribution system and GIGA shall use it to develop and operate a large scale energy storage project.
Triodos Renewables Transition Europe Fund: Assisting Triodos with the project financing (for the construction) of one of the largest battery developments in the Netherlands – the iwell Mega Cube, a unique project that makes it possible to balance the supply and demand for green energy.
Rabobank: Assisted with the setting up of its innovative new business line “Energy as a Service”, set up by Rabobank to make renewable energy solutions available to a wider audience by Rabobank financing Energy as a Service special purpose vehicle that leases renewable energy solutions including solar panels, windmills, charging stations and geothermal heat systems to consumers and businesses.
Rabobank: Assisted with the financing of Park n Charge (PnC) to build public charging stations in municipalities in the Netherlands via a structure that is not commonly provided by traditional banks.
Rabobank: Assisted with the financing of Econic, a cutting-edge Sustainability as a Service Provider and builder of e-homes.
Rabobank: Assisted with a €175 million cross-border project financing for the Republic of Honduras to finance a large plantation and education project for the state of Honduras with the help from Rabobank and the Danish export credit agency EKF as lenders.
E-Piim Tootmine (ING Bank): Advised on the financing of the construction and operation a dairy production facility of E-Piim Tootmine in Estonia. Cross jurisdictional export finance transaction including Estonia, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, and governmental agencies, including export credit agencies, involved. Next to structuring, negotiating and documenting the deal in an efficient manner, we helped to manage a consortium of lenders, including an international bank, a development finance institution and a local relationship bank, which entailed finding innovative solutions in handling these complicated export and project finance transactions in ways which would address the various concerns of the parties involved.
Deutsche Bank and ING Bank: Assisting both ING and Deutsche Bank as syndicate lenders in a $2,165,000,000 project financing provided to San Miguel Corporation and relating to an airport in the Philippines. Represented ING in negotiating and documenting those refinancing facilities.
Société Générale, ABN AMRO Bank: Advised Société Générale and ABN AMRO Bank in respect of securing the financing for the largest geothermal project in the Netherlands (Warmte van Leeuwarden). The Warmte van Leeuwarden project consortium plans to provide buildings and homes with sustainable heating from geothermal energy which will then be connected to create a new district heating system. Our advice included advising on and negotiating the financing structure of the project.
Berlin Hyp / Landesbank Hessen-Thüringen Girozentrale: Assisted Berlin Hyp and Landesbank Hessen-Thüringen Girozentrale on the financing of the acquisition of the offices of Hoog Catharijne by Schroders.
Berlin Hyp: Assisted on a €51 million real estate financing of the Ruby Hotel in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Lead counsel responsible for the drafting of all finance documents and a due diligence report.
Round Hill Capital: Assisted with the amendment and restatement of their credit facility with ING Bank and the add-on of several properties acquired by Round Hill Capital to that facility. Responsible for the negotiation of all finance documents.
Round Hill Capital: Assisted with the €50 million refinancing of a large property set to become one of Utrecht’s (the Netherlands) newest, greenest and largest residential area’s to be developed by Round Hill Capital. Responsible for the negotiation of all finance documents.
HSBC: Assisted in connection with the financing of the acquisition of shopping centre Heuvel in Eindhoven by 3W Real Estate and AT Capital.
HSBC: Advising on the financing of various retail commercial real estate portfolios (shopping malls) located in the Netherlands as acquired by several property companies.
