More than 200 clients and friends of the Firm attended our Chicago office's annual Continuing Legal Education program on June 8. My session, "The Paris Climate Agreement," covered the landmark steps taken by 195 nations in December 2015 to tackle the global threat posed by climate change.

The presentation provided a brief background to the UN discussions on climate change, including the precedents in regulatory structure from the US Clean Air Act. It also considered the remarkable consensus on the text of the Paris Agreement, and examined the role of adaptation and finance.  Other key topics included corporate social responsibility measures, the use of REDD+ as an intended nationally determined contribution (INDC) strategy, the rule of law, smart agricultural practices to increase food production while reducing environmental impacts, actions by the aviation industry, the "Paris Puzzle" for petroleum producers and the role of the Green Climate Fund with other public and private funding.
