Los Angeles, CA—A cross-border Dentons team from the Los Angeles and Vancouver offices worked together to negotiate financing with an independent investor group for “Alex of Venice,” an independent film directed by TV and movie actor Chris Messina. “Alex of Venice” has been selected to appear in the Spotlight section of the 13th annual Tribeca Film Festival in April.
Corporate partner Elizabeth Foster led the team from Los Angeles, which included New York Tax partner Marc Teitelbaum and Vancouver Banking and Finance partner Juliet Smith.
The film marks a directorial debut for Chris Messina, who is known for his roles as Danny Castellano on “The Mindy Project,” Chris Sanchez in “Damages” and Reese Lansing in “The Newsroom.” He plays George in “Alex of Venice,” the husband of main character Alex (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a workaholic environmental attorney who has always relied on him to handle domestic life. When George suddenly asks for a break, Alex is forced to take control of the chaos, juggling her son, her father (Don Johnson), sister (Katie Nehra) and the biggest case of her career. Jessica Goldberg, Katie Nehra and Justin Shilton wrote the screenplay.
“Alex of Venice” debuts in the Spotlight section of the Tribeca Film Festival, a program featuring 22 narrative and nine documentary films from around the world, 20 of which will be shown for the first time. The section includes movies by established filmmakers such as Joss Whedon and Courtney Cox in addition to emerging writers and directors.
