Düsseldorf/Rome—Global law firm Dentons has advised Volkswagen on all aspects of antitrust and merger control law in connection with the formation of a joint venture with Italian energy supplier Enel X. 

The joint venture will build and operate a high power charging network in Italy. The network will comprise more than 3,000 fast charging points in Italy, each with a charging speed of up to 350 kW. The focus will be on city centres as well as important commuter routes and connecting roads outside of cities.

Due to the worldwide activities of both companies, merger control filings were required in numerous states. The proceedings at the EU Commission were unusual in that the EU Commission referred the case to the Italian antitrust authority (AGCM). There, after an in-depth examination, the transaction was cleared without conditions and obligations. The closing took place on 29 December.
