Under the Tax Code, individuals who are tax residents of Kazakhstan are obliged to file a personal income tax return (PIT) in respect of certain types of income, including:

• Income from foreign sources (e.g. salary, dividends, etc.)
• Income from sale of real estate (in the form of capital gains) and (or) from rental of such real estate
• Income in the form of capital gains from sale of securities (including through a broker), as well as dividends and interests on such securities
• Income in the form of profits of a controlled foreign company.

Recipients of such income should independently calculate the amount of PIT, complete the PIT return, submit it and pay the assesed tax to the budget. 

Unless otherwise stated by an international agreement, residents for tax purposes are individuals (i) who reside in the territory of Kazakhstan for more than 183 days; or (ii) whose center of vital interests (i.e., citizenship, residence of close relatives, availability of housing) is in Kazakhstan.

The deadline for submitting your PIT declaration for the 2021 reporting period is March 31, 2022; the assessed tax should be paid by April 10, 2022.

Failure to comply with the requirements for PIT reporting and payment of tax entails liability in accordance with the administrative or criminal legislation of Kazakhstan.
