Jackie is a Partner in our Employment and Safety team in the Brisbane office.

Jackie has performed public sector employment law, acting exclusively for the State of Queensland and statutory authorities for 25 years. Jackie worked at Crown Law for 20 years and for 10 of those years was the Assistant Crown Solicitor for one of Crown Law’s employment law teams. For the past five years, Jackie has been acting for the State and statutory authorities in private practice.

She has advisory and litigation experience in the areas of discrimination law, workplace law, industrial law, discipline matters and statutory WorkCover claims, including appeals/reviews. She also has experience in defending class actions in the Federal Court of Australia and Commission of Inquiry work.

Experience

Acted for two key witnesses in the DNA Commission of Inquiry in 2022 and the re-opened DNA Commission of Inquiry in 2023.
Acted for the Queensland Investment Commission in the transfer of the first asset, being the Queensland Titles Registry, into the Queensland Future Fund in 2021. This work involved advising on the transfer of employees from a State Government employer to a National System employer. It involved Industrial Relations consultation, advising on the mechanism to affect the transfer, the enabling legislation to affect the transfer and the like.
Renegotiated a new enterprise agreement for Titles Queensland in 2023.
Defended two Ministers of the Crown in relation to claims of discrimination under the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 and one Minister of the Crown in a WorkCover claim; details cannot be provided as settled before hearing.
Defended a claim of discrimination by a former Assistant Minister for Health in Davis v Metro North Hospital and Health Service and Ors [2019] QCAT 18. Dr. Davis alleged discrimination on the basis of political belief under the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991.
Defended the State in Lyons v State of Queensland [2016] HCA 38, which concerned a deaf juror who claimed she had been discriminated against under the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 on the basis of her impairment as she was not permitted to perform jury duty. This claim was eventually heard in the High Court of Australia.
Defended the State in a class action in Wotton v State of Queensland and Anor [2012] 246 CLR 1. This was a Federal Court representative proceeding brought by three lead applicants on behalf of 450 Indigenous residents on Palm Island. After the Federal Court found in the applicants’ favour, the State settled the group members’ claims at mediation for AU$30,000,000; details can be provided as it is a matter of public record.
Drafted the show cause documents and advised in relation to the discipline process against the former employees of Queensland Health, who managed Joel Morehu-Barlow (the fake Tahitian prince) who committed a fraud against Queensland Health of approximately AU$16,000,000.
